The 10,000 Hours Myth, Mindset Coaching for Poker Players, How to Train Your Brain & More!
Hello Everyone,
My clients are posting huge international successes, and these do not happen without a lot of effort by both coach and client. These are the two comments that recur time and time again in my discussions about luck to the point where they become worrying.
The harder you practice, the luckier you get.
It takes at least 10,000 hours of practice to be an expert.
Without doubt there is a LOT of TRUTH in both these statements. But they are quoted as if they are the WHOLE TRUTH, and nothing could be further FROM THE TRUTH.
The reason that the last statement in particular worries me is that it can be a powerful negative self-fulfilling prophecy. It also does not give enough credit to innate talent, or to the power of accelerated learning delivered by skilful coaching.
How many people will be put off learning a new skill when they work out that 10,000 hours will take them at least 10 years to clock up?
The 10,000 hours myth surfaced in a paper published by Ericsson in 1993. It is a brilliant paper, 40 pages long, extremely technical, and definitely not an easy read. Which might be why the 10,000 hours conclusions are not as clear as some might believe. When writing a scientific paper the biggest challenge is to eliminate what the statisticians call the ‘confounding factors’ which can skew the results.
Let me explain. Do you think a kid who clocks up 10,000 hours of deep violin practice is going to be the average kid next door, with average parents, earning an average income, who have an average interest in music?
I don’t think so, and to be fair neither did Ericsson and his colleagues. Of course this talented and conscientious kid wholly deserves our respect. However, I’m more interested in the kid from the ghetto who does not have these advantages, who improvises, and who finds other ways that allows talent to surface. The kid who has fun, experiments, and does not take 10,000 hours to be an expert.
Mindset Coaching
A mindset coach is a trained professional who guides individuals towards developing a positive and empowering mindset. I can provide support, guidance, and strategies to help clients overcome self-limiting beliefs, negative thought patterns, and mental barriers that hinder personal and professional growth.
As a mindset coach, I work closely with individuals to help them identify and shift their perspectives, cultivate resilience, enhance self-awareness, and develop effective strategies for achieving their goals.
So here's my story of how I ended being a mindset coach!
I’d always wanted to be a doctor and at medical school the two subjects that most excited me were surgery and psychiatry.
I chose surgery and had always wanted to travel. Over the following years I worked in Nigeria, Angola, Kazakhstan, and other places setting up and running hospitals in challenging locations. During these years I was also the victim of capture, armed conflict, malaria, dengue, tumbu fly, and dysentery. In other words, I have definitely seen the world! Strangely enough, I enjoyed almost every minute of it, until my life changed in a matter of minutes.
I became increasingly aware of pain in my shoulder blades. I tried all the usual treatments and nothing made any difference. It got worse and worse and made sleep and travel difficult. If not impossible. My employer sent me for an MRI scan and to our surprise I had serious neck problems.
I was no longer fit for emergency response duties and had to find a new job. I felt this was the worst thing that could’ve happened.
I’m a great believer in synchronicity and coincidently and several months before I had read a book about NLP on holiday and knew immediately that I wanted to find out more about the subject.
To cut a very long story short I have found my calling. I trained with the best, and learnt things I had never even dreamt of.
It is not psychiatry, but it is certainly mental health and how to use the brain the way it was meant to be used to turbocharge performance.
My new career started in 2007 and I have not looked back since then. I have worked with amazing people from all walks of life and many of them have gone on to achieve incredible success.
As the expression goes, things happen for a reason. Looking back my decision to study NLP and pursue a career in mind coaching was the best decision I’ve ever made. It's how I helped Chris Moorman, the most accomplished online poker player in the world!
On Christmas last year, Chris made the final tables again of the World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas. It’s the biggest professional poker tournament of the year, and he came fourth, winning over $1 million.
During the early part of our journey together, Chris and I spent a lot of time working on breathing techniques and meditation. Most of our work is now hardwired, so our conversations before a big tournament are a bit like a pilot going through a checklist to ensure that we haven’t forgotten anything.
Now I want to work with you! This video explains briefly what you can expect from me, what you can expect from my 28-day poker mindset coaching program.
To join the program, simply write to me and I’ll send you the details to book our first coaching session together.
